Madrid Sports and Outdoor Activities

Spain has produced sportsmen and women of championship standards in a variety of sports, such as cycling, golf, tennis, and many others. This has resulted in a rapid expansion of facilities for spectators and participants. Between March and June, it is possible to watch championship events in a variety of sports including cycling, tennis, and football (soccer).

FÚTBOL (SOCCER)
Futbol is Spain’s number one spectator sport. Approximately 300,000 fans watch the Primera División at weekends during the season between September and May. Madrid’s two premier teams are Real and Atlético Madrid and there is an immense rivalry between the clubs.

Admission: Tickets can be purchased at the clubs on the day of the game although booking in advance for the bigger matches is recommended. Advance tickets may be obtained either from the stadiums or a more expensive option is via ticket offices near Puerta del Sol on Calle de la Victoria.

Madrid is nor Only Football

Although football is the King of sports, not all the elite sport is about football. The basketball has three elite teams (Real Madrid, Estudiantes y Fuenlabrada) that participate in the ACB league, indoor football (soccer), the Rugby Club Cisneros, or Water polo are some examples of the elite teams from Madrid.

BASKETBALL

Basketball is Spain’s second-biggest spectator sport. Basketball is almost as popular as football. Real Madrid Students and Fuenlabrada, a town about 15 kilometers from the center of the capital, are all clubs that play in the top-level men’s pro basketball league ACB. The WiZink Center is the home arena of Real Madrid, it hosts ACB and Euroleague games.

BULLFIGHTING

Madrid is the international capital of bullfighting with the Plaza de Toros Monumental de Las Ventas being the biggest ring in the bullfighting world, seating 23,000 spectators. A fight begins with the matador meeting the bull, assessing his size, and using the red and yellow cape to wear the beast out.

HORSERACING

The day race season runs from February to June and mid-September to early December. During the summer races are held at the Hipódromo La Zarzuela starting around midnight to 02:00.

GOLF

Several golf clubs in the Madrid vicinity are open year-round and for a fee, entry is available to non-members. If you are into Golf, without a doubt the Region of Madrid is your destination since it has more than 25 golf courses and the highest number of federates in Spain.

Madrid has a wide range of landscapes as big as it will allow you to enjoy nature with all kinds of outdoor activities. you can hike in some of the 10 natural areas with special protection.

In the mountainous areas, you can practice all kinds of mountain sports, organized by some companies of active tourism. You also have a lot of places where you can climb: La Pedriza, San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the Cabrera Range, the San Juan Reservoir, etc.

SKIING AND WINTER SPORTS
